Top 5 Must Eats at Tim Ho Wan (添好運) Singapore

Tim Ho Wan Singapore

Michelin-starred Tim Ho Wan took Singapore by storm with its first outlet (and crazily long queues) at Plaza Singapura at Dhoby Ghaut. Now, easties (like me) rejoice! Tim Ho Wan has opened an outlet in the eastern part of Singapore- right at the new Bedok Mall! Out of the 25 items offered at Tim Ho Wan Singapore, we have chosen our top 5 must-eats!

Tim Ho Wan is  quite a specialist when it comes to dim sum- its menu is very much shorter than that at Swee Choon or any other dim sum restaurants. Good for indecisive people like me, and I think this helps in making sure that they are not compromising the quality of food for the variety. Here are our top 5 must-eats!

5. Vermicelli Roll with Shrimp ($5.50)

The bane of any vermicelli roll is its thickness. Tim Ho Wan does their vermicelli rolls with the right thickness and texture. The thin and smooth vermicelli wraps the huge chunks of shrimp perfectly. The soya sauce is not too salty, and does well in enhancing the flavour of the vermicelli roll. Light and gentle, yet flavoursome.

4. Pork Dumpling with Shrimp ($5.00)

Tim Ho Wan's rendition of siew mai comes with a twist- there is huge shrimp in the minced pork and it is topped with a sweet gou qi zi (chinese wolfberry fruit). The yellow skin is not too thick or hard, and it locks the juice of the prawn and the pork well in the dumpling. The gou qi zi adds a tinge of sweet aftertaste to savoury flavour of the meat.

3. Pan Fried Carrot Cake ($4.50)

Tim Ho Wan's pan fried carrot cake is not just a white floury pancake with charred sides. It is solidly (and honestly) packed with strips of white radish, and bits of chinese sausage and dried shrimps in between. Tim Ho Wan's carrot cake literally melts in your mouth and slids down your throat so gently you could only reach for more to let the goodness linger further.

2. Beancurd Skin Roll with Pork & Shrimp ($4.00)

The beancurd skin roll at Tim Ho Wan is generously packed with well marinated minced pork and shrimps. The winning factor here is how well the sauce complements the beancurd skin, and it is heavenly especially when it is served piping hot.

1. Baked Bun with BBQ Pork

Insides of Tim Ho Wan Singapore Baked Bun with BBQ Pork

You have to try Tim Ho Wan's baked bun with BBQ pork, at least once in your lifetime. You must. The pale brown bun may look unassuming but boy, it spews red lava of flavourful char siew that is all so tender and juicy. The BBQ sauce is savoury and goes really well with the baked bun that is extremely crispy on the outside, but extremely fluffy on the inside. Tim Ho Wan's baked bun with BBQ pork is power-packed, and I guarantee that you would reach for a second one. And perhaps, a third or fourth. It is that awesome.

Bonus: Tonic Medlar and Osmanthus Cake ($3.50)

Tim Ho Wan Singapore's Osmanthus Cake

Oh come on, it is so hard to stop at 5. I have to squeeze the Osmanthus Cake into this list. I never knew the big deal about Osmanthus cake when they are featured extensively in TVB period dramas- the Osmanthus cake is always the love potion the concubines used to win the hearts of the Emperor. But, isn't it just some flower jelly? Oh boy, now I understand. The Osmanthus cake is charming. The fragrant of the Osmanthus is light yet impactful, the gou qi zi is tiny yet powerful. Every bite is like a stroll in the garden, with flowers blossoming in your heart. I am swooned.

The only down-side at Tim Ho Wan Singapore is the 50 cents charge for water. Albeit free-flow, I still find it an exorbitant charge. With such flavourful dishes, how can one not have water to go along with the meal? The next best option is $1.20 for (free-flow) chinese tea, and this is well worth it as the tea is thick and packed with flavour.

Everything at Tim Ho Wan is fast paced- from the short serving time to the footsteps of service staff to the upbeat canto music. Be prepared to feel like you are in Hong Kong during your (short) stay at Tim Ho Wan.
